Brian Lambert, Buckhorn Nursery, Hardee
Brian Lambert and his family own and operate Buckhorn Nursery in Zolfo Springs, Florida. The farm was established in the 1930s by Brian’s grandfather, Porter Lambert, producing row crops and citrus. In 1959, Brian’s father, Ronald Lambert, began the nursery as it is today. They proudly produce foliage plants. Buckhorn Nursery has been implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) on the nursery for decades. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Buckhorn Nursery uses a computer based system to irrigate, that factors in the surrounding environment and the best time of day to irrigate the various foliage plants. Greenhouses are used for cold protection to minimize the use of water as an alternative for freeze protection. A series of concrete and ditches are also used to control and recycle any excess water or rainwater from the nursery.
Mr. Lambert is actively involved in his local community. He is a member of the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association, supplies plants for community events and is a Florida Farm Bureau member. He and his family attend New Hope Baptist Church in Wauchula. When asked why he is a farmer who CARES, he responded, “we all have to work together to leave the world in better shape for future generations.”
