Dr. Jimmy Lanier, Candy Bar Ranch, DeSoto

Dr. Jimmy Lanier and his wife own and operate Candy Bar Ranch in Arcadia, Florida. Candy Bar Ranch was established in 2002 when Dr. Lanier acquired the land. They proudly produce cattle. Candy Bar Ranch has been implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) on the farm since the early 2000’s. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Dr. Lanier practices a rotational grazing system that improves pasture longevity, allows for more timely utilization of forage and increases the stocking rates. Solar wells have also been installed to provide a reliable source of drinking water for the cattle as well as keeping the cattle from disturbing the natural wetlands. Prescribed burns are used throughout the land to suppress many undesirable plant species and to enhance the palatability and nutritional value of edible plants for wildlife and livestock. Soil samples, along with many other BMPs are practiced on the farm to ensure the land is in the best condition possible.

Dr. Lanier is actively involved in his local community. He is a part of the Arcadia Rodeo Association and a member and past president of the Florida Veterinary Medical Association. He and his wife are also active members at Trinity United Methodist Church in Arcadia. When asked why he is a farmer who CARES, Dr. Lanier responded, “to show our love of the land by helping preserve our rural and ranching heritage for generations to come.”
