Nolan Galloway III

Nolan Galloway III, Canaan Ranch, Gilchrist

Nolan Galloway and his family own and operate Canaan Ranch in Neals, Florida. The farm was started 70 years ago when Mr. Galloway’s great grandfather purchased the land. They proudly produce timber. Mr. Galloway has been implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) on the farm for decades. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Canaan Ranch is located on the rolling sand hills of Florida and has a rare habitat of long leaf pines. Mr. Galloway uses a prescribed burning system to suppress many undesirable plant species to maintain the trees natural balance. This also enhances the palatability and nutritional value of edible species throughout the land.

Mr. Galloway is actively involved in his community. He is part of the Tree Farmers of America and works with the Safe Harbor Program to protect and preserve the habitat for endangered woodpeckers. Mr. Galloway also works with the UF Forestry Club, opening his ranch for educational tours showcasing what he and his family do. Mr. Galloway and his family attend church in Ocala. When asked why he is a farmer who CARES, Galloway responded, “we have an obligation to steward the land for the environment, community and our family. In life you can only go two directions, forward or backwards and we choose to go forward.”
